Do I need to sign up for a Medicare
Advantage Plan or Medigap Plan?
In short the answer is no. You are able to stay on Original Medicare and not sign up for either a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement Plan.
Most individuals decide to either sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement. This is because they offer additional coverage benefits, that are not covered by Original Medicare by itself.
If you would like to have broad access to Doctors, Specialist, and Hospitals across the USA, then staying on Original Medicare and purchasing a Medigap plan could be your best option. The Medigap plan fills in the gaps left behind within Original Medicare. It’s important to understand all of your Medicare Cost on the front end.
However, if you decide you want to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, (as many do not have a monthly premium but may include copays, deductibles, and max out of pocket expenses) by doing so you will be lose your rights under Original Medicare and you will be required to comply with the Advantage Plans network of Doctors and Hospitals. Most of these plans are HMO style plans, which means you are tied to their approved network of Doctors, Specialist, and facilities.
Under a Medicare Advantage plan, even if Original Medicare would have covered a Doctor or Hospital, if you go outside of your Medicare Advantage Plan network you may not be covered by your Medicare Advantage Plan and will be responsible for the entire bill.
It is important that you evaluate all plan options before you make your decision. This is because switching from a Medicare Advantage Plan into a Medigap plan after your guaranteed issue period end may not be possible.
